If you only have time for one excursion, make it this one. The Garni to Geghard day trip is the most popular day trip from Yerevan, two of Armenia’s greatest sights, set in a dramatic gorge, and easily done in half a day.

Garni Temple: Armenia’s Greco-Roman jewel

Perched above the Azat River gorge, Garni Temple is a striking 1st-century Greco-Roman temple, the only standing colonnaded pagan temple in the former Soviet space. Rebuilt from its original stones after a 1679 earthquake, its 24 Ionic columns frame sweeping views over the canyon and its famous “Symphony of Stones”, a wall of natural hexagonal basalt columns below.

Geghard Monastery: a church carved from rock

A short drive further up the gorge brings you to Geghard, a UNESCO World Heritage monastery partly carved directly into the cliff face. Its rock-hewn chapels, remarkable acoustics and khachkars (cross-stones) make it one of the most atmospheric places in Armenia. Its name means “spear”, a reference to the relic said to have once been kept here.

How to get to Garni and Geghard from Yerevan

Both sites lie about 30–40 km east of the capital and are almost always visited together:

  • Private tour or taxi: the easiest and most comfortable option, and the way to combine both sites at your own pace. This is exactly the kind of all-inclusive day tour we run from Yerevan.
  • Marshrutka (minibus): cheap but only reaches Garni village; you’ll need a taxi for the last stretch to Geghard.

Tips for the perfect day

  • Pair it with a home-baked lavash demonstration in Garni village, many families offer it.
  • Go early to beat the tour buses at Geghard.
  • Add Lake Sevan or Khor Virap to make it a full-day loop.
