Do you need a visa for Armenia? For most travellers the answer is reassuringly simple: no visa for short tourist stays, and for those who do need one, a cheap e-visa takes minutes online. Here is what applies before you travel to Armenia.

This is general guidance and rules change, always confirm the current requirement for your nationality on the official Armenian e-visa portal or with an Armenian embassy before you book.

Do I need a visa for Armenia?

Visa-free. Citizens of the European Union and Switzerland can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. Nationals of the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and many other countries are also visa-exempt for short stays. In practice, most Western travellers simply arrive with a valid passport and get a stamp.

e-visa or visa on arrival. Travellers whose country isn’t on the visa-free list can apply for an e-visa online before travelling, or in some cases obtain a visa on arrival at Zvartnots Airport. The process is quick and inexpensive.

Because lists are updated periodically, check your specific nationality on the official portal, but for EU, UK, North American and Australian passport holders, a short holiday needs no visa at all.

Passport validity

Make sure your passport is valid for at least the duration of your stay. Some nationalities are asked for validity of 3 to 6 months beyond departure, so the safe rule is to travel with at least 6 months’ validity remaining.

How much does an Armenian e-visa cost?

For those who need one, the tourist visa costs around US$10 and is valid for 21 days. A longer 120-day visa costs around US$40. These visas are usually single-entry, and processing typically takes about three working days. Visas are issued free of charge for children and young people up to 18.

How to apply for an e-visa

  1. Go to the official Armenian e-visa portal (avoid third-party sites that add fees).
  2. Fill in the online form with your passport and travel details.
  3. Pay the fee by card.
  4. Receive your e-visa by email, print it or keep a copy on your phone to show on arrival.

Extending your stay

If you want to stay longer than your visa-free or e-visa period, extensions are handled through Armenia’s migration service. If you’re planning a long trip, factor this in early rather than at the last minute.

Entering Armenia

Armenia’s open land border is with Georgia (the popular overland route from Tbilisi) and with Iran. The borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed, so you cannot enter from those countries. Most visitors fly into Zvartnots Airport in Yerevan; see how to get to Armenia for routes and airlines.
