Green, cool and wrapped in forest, Dilijan feels like a different Armenia. Nicknamed the country’s “Little Switzerland”, this spa town in the northern Tavush region trades the dry Ararat plain for wooded hills, mineral springs and monasteries hidden among the trees, an easy and rewarding trip from Yerevan.

Why go to Dilijan

Set inside Dilijan National Park, the town has long been a retreat for writers, composers and artists drawn by its clean air and greenery. Today it pairs that old resort charm with a beautifully restored old quarter and some of the country’s finest forest monasteries. It is the gateway to the north-east, covered more widely in our guide to north-east Armenia.

What to see

  • Haghartsin Monastery. A 10th to 13th-century complex in a clearing deep in the forest, one of the most beautiful settings in the country.
  • Goshavank Monastery. Founded by the medieval scholar Mkhitar Gosh, known for its finely carved khachkars.
  • Sharambeyan Street (Old Dilijan). A restored lane of craft workshops, galleries and cafés, the picture-book heart of town.
  • Parz Lake and the forest trails. A calm woodland lake and the starting point for easy walks; keen hikers can pick up the Transcaucasian Trail, see hiking in Armenia.

How to get to Dilijan from Yerevan

About 1 hour 45 minutes north by road, over the pass.

  • On a tour (easiest). Dilijan is usually combined with Lake Sevan on the way, exactly how our all-inclusive tours route the northern loop, with a private driver-guide.
  • By taxi or hired car. The most flexible option, and comfortable for the mountain road; hire for the day or as a transfer.
  • By marshrutka (cheapest). Minibuses run from Yerevan’s Northern (Hyusisayin) bus station toward Dilijan and Ijevan; it is slower but very cheap.

Practical tips

  • Entry: the monasteries are free (donations welcome).
  • How long: Dilijan rewards an overnight; a rushed day trip works but you will wish you had stayed.
  • Best time: glorious in late spring, summer and especially autumn, when the forests turn gold. It is cooler and wetter than Yerevan, bring a layer even in summer.
  • Where to stay: the town has everything from cosy guesthouses to design hotels; see our notes on where to stay in Armenia.

Combine it with

Dilijan slots perfectly between Lake Sevan and the monasteries of the deeper north-east. Many travellers make it their first night out of Yerevan on a 5 or 8-day itinerary.
