If Khor Virap is where Armenia became Christian, Etchmiadzin is where that faith made its home. The town of Vagharshapat, 20 km west of Yerevan, is the seat of the Catholicos of All Armenians and the spiritual centre of the world’s oldest state church, effectively the Vatican of Armenia.

Why Etchmiadzin matters

The Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin is, by tradition, one of the oldest cathedrals in the world, founded in 301 to 303 AD soon after Armenia adopted Christianity as its state religion. Its name means “the descent of the Only-Begotten”, after a vision of Christ that marked the spot. For seventeen centuries this has been the heart of the Armenian Church, and it remains a living, working religious centre, part of the long story told in our history of Armenia.

What to see

  • The Mother Cathedral. The central church and its residence complex, the seat of the Catholicos.
  • The treasury museum. Home to remarkable relics, including the Holy Lance once kept at Geghard, and, by tradition, a fragment of Noah’s Ark.
  • St Hripsime and St Gayane. Two beautiful early-medieval churches in the town, both part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, elegant examples of Armenian architecture. (See our guide to Armenia’s World Heritage Sites.)
  • Zvartnots. The dramatic 7th-century circular cathedral ruins, on the road back to Yerevan (a separate UNESCO site).

How to get to Etchmiadzin from Yerevan

An easy 30 minute drive west.

  • On a tour (easiest). Etchmiadzin, Zvartnots and Khor Virap make a classic guided half-day; our all-inclusive tours run it with a private driver-guide.
  • By taxi. A one-way taxi is inexpensive; hiring a car for the half-day is the most comfortable option.
  • By marshrutka (cheapest). Minibuses 202 and 203 run to Vagharshapat from the Kilikia bus station in Yerevan, roughly every 30 minutes.

More on transport in getting around Armenia.

Practical tips

  • Entry: the cathedral and grounds are free; the treasury museum and Zvartnots charge a small fee (Zvartnots is closed on Mondays).
  • Hours: the grounds are open daily; museums keep shorter hours, so come before mid-afternoon.
  • How long: 1 to 2 hours in Etchmiadzin, plus 30 to 45 minutes at Zvartnots.
  • Dress code: a sacred site, dress modestly; check whether a service is on, as access may be limited.
  • Timing: try to catch a service for the singing, and avoid major church feast days unless you want the crowds.

Combine it with

Etchmiadzin sits perfectly with Zvartnots and Khor Virap for a half-day of early Christian heritage, or with the museums and cafés of Yerevan afterwards.
